Garden Club of Brewster
January 4, 2012
President Janet Husband called the meeting to order at 10:00AM.
Janet introduced Henry Callan, Antiques Appraiser, who spoke on “Antique and Vintage Vases”. Henry
also dated and appraised vases brought in by the members.
2011 Scholarship Winner, Abigail Erickson, was introduced by Janet Husband. Abigail is studying
chemistry and engineering at Smith College.
Janet Husband announced a change in the program for the February meeting. Sharon Oudermool of
Harwich will present a slide show of Japanese Gardens. Twelve members will attend today’s workshop on
carving vegetables.
The minutes of the previous meeting were approved.
Treasurer Suzanne Sullivan reported last month’s income was $664.87 and expenses were $840.54. As
of December 10, 2011, the balance in the treasury was $10,553.73.
Conservation Co-Chair Alyce Favreau reported that the Brewster Conservation Trust is trying to save
two ponds – Round Pond and Dollar Pond. Although some land around these ponds has been given to
the Trust, they would like to purchase more. Tax deductible donations would be appreciated.
Education Grants Co-Chair Maureen Perri read a thank you note from Catherine Stratico, a fifth grade
teacher at Stony Brook School, for our contribution to her biome project. Maureen has pictures of the
project and thank you notes from the students. On December 22, Maureen helped a first grade class at
Stony Brook School create greenery bouquets funded by our grant.
Hospitality Co-Chair Julie Deloye thanked Linda Lee Comly and Kathleen Weyman for co-chairing today’
s luncheon. Floral centerpieces were done by Gail Hanson and Julie Deloye did the floral creation. Food
was provided by June Borge, Ivy Kinscherf, Anne O’Connell, Diana Ovian, Mae Trapasso, and Mary Ann
Vetrano. All were thanked by Julie.
Membership Co-Chair Gail Hanson introduced new member Joan Abraham and presented her with a pot
of daffodils. She also welcomed two guests – Margaret Clark and Maureen Dyson.
Tower Hill Trip Chair Susan Logsdon reported that on Thursday, May 17, there will be a day trip to Tower
Hill Botanical Gardens. The cost will be $50.00. This will include bus transportation, the entrance fee, a
box lunch, a guided tour of the gardens, and a special program about the “Late Summer Garden”.
Guests are welcome. There are 47 places on the bus. After our February 1 meeting, if there are places
still available, the Harwich Garden Club will be invited. A sign up sheet is available today and payment
may be made today. Reservations are confirmed only when payment is made and there are no refunds
unless there is a waiting list. Make checks payable to the Garden Club of Brewster. A flier will be
available as soon as Susan can confirm food choices.
Susan Logsdon announced that Sue Johnson will have a shell workshop at her home on Monday,
January 16 at 10:00AM. Please bring a glue gun, shells, and any item that can be decorated with shells.

Donna Hill, Remembrance Chair, sent a card to past member Pat McLoud who was treated for cancer on
her leg. Barbara Kavoogian recently had shoulder surgery. We missed the fact that Sheila Garran had
shoulder surgery in August. Donna brought poinsettias to both ladies.
The meeting was adjourned at 11:50 AM.
