October 2011 Beautification Award The 2011 Beautification Award was presented by the Horticulture Committee to Ocean Edge. The award is given each year in recognition of a landscaping/garden design of an individual or a business which can be appreciated by the general public. A framed document was presented to John Phillips, the head landscaper who oversees the plantings in front of the mansion of 6A. Garden Club members may make suggestions to the horticulture committee throughout the year for next year's winner. Thank You!! Watch for sign-ups and displays of boutique items at future meetings. October 1, 2011 Plant Swap A Plant Swap was originally held in Nickerson State Park but interest in it seemed to fall. An attempt to have it at our monthly meeting seemed unsuccessful. By popular demand to bring it back, we obtained the only available date to reserve the Brewster C.O.A., so it was held on Saturday, October 1, a very rainy morning. Despite the weather, around 30 members (and non members) arrived with plants to swap. It was a pleasant morning despite the weather, giving people a chance to visit together and discuss the interesting plants that were brought in. Many people left with a sunny smile as they carried their new plants to their car. September 2011 Cape Art Blooms at Dennis Museum of Art In celebration of the Cape Cod Museum of Arts' 30th anniversary, the museum sponsored "Cape Art Blooms" on September 30 - October 2. This new event was inspired by "Art in Bloom" held each spring in the Boston Museum of Fine Arts. The Brewster Garden Club was one of the 17 participants along with many other garden clubs from the area. Each participant was assigned an object or painting in the museum and instructed to create a floral design that would express the spirit of the selected art piece. Judy Racely and Ursula Gainty volunteered to represent our garden club. The art piece assigned to them was a painting by Frank Coroza Nicolas titled "Morning Chores". Judy and Ursula selected fall colored flowers and plant material to represent the fall reflections and plants in the painting . a large blue hydrangea represented the blue boat which dominated the scene. Of great interest was the container, a Nantucket basket handmade by Judy Racely. It represented the wooden texture of the lobster pots. |
